SRV Gold Award

Ironically I received my latest award for one of my first eligible recordings. In late 1982 I was engineering the second of several albums I did with Johnny Copeland. We had a guest guitarist stop by the session at Unique Recording. I hadn't heard of him, but producer Dan Doyle told me he was a friend of Johnny's and was coming directly from playing on David Bowie's new record, Let's Dance. So I figured he'd be OK.... ;-)

The session was unbelievable. We set them up side by side, and I brought up the outputs of their setups onto two patch cords. They'd rip through a song top to bottom; then I'd move the patch cords over to the next two tracks while the tape re-wound. Then they'd do it again, over and over.

Stevie played on two tracks that night: When the Rain Starts Fallin', and Don't Stop by the Creek, Son, the later of which ended up on SRV.

Unfortunately, they're both gone now. Stevie died in the awful helicopter crash on August 27, 1990. Johnny went on to win the W.C. Handy Award and a Grammy for Slowdown with Albert Collins and Robert Cray. He died from complications following heart surgery on July 3, 1997.

Even Unique Recording is gone as of 2004. And sorry to say, those tapes, and all those solos, are gone....

Here's link to some nice remembrances of SRV. There's Darryl Pitt, Montreux photographer, who took the photo on the award above. It was taken at Montreux in 1985. David Bowie talks about the Let's Dance session. And SRV and Double Trouble remember Montreux.
